All throughout high school my mom was battling cancer and I didn't even tell my closest friends. They asked me to give a speech at my graduation but I didn’t go because my mom died from cancer the day before. I studied government in college then I went on to study law at Harvard and Columbia. I wanted to follow my mom's example and try to make the world a better place for women and all people. I met my future husband (Marty) at Cornell University. He was the only one who stuck out to me. I was 21 years old when I got married to Marty on June 23, 1954. It was a magical day. I had my first child ,Jane, on July 1 , 1955. I had my second child ,James, on September 8 , 1965. During this time my husband was diagnosed with cancer and we were still in law school. I would have Marty’s friends send me his notes and I would write all his papers for him because I didn’t want him to give up on his dreams. It would be long past midnight before I had time to start working on my own work. I was running off of as little as 3 hours of sleep . Thankfully, the treatments worked and he survived!
